You try to keep your family busy and, for the most part, you manage to do a good job. However, life can be a lot. And some days, it’s just too much to also plan an event. In that case, here are a few suggestions to help you come up with ideas for family activities on the days when you’re running low on energy.
Adopt a Pet
While this will become much more of an ongoing activity, it will allow you to teach your kids some responsibility and they’ll have a new built-in best friend. If you’re too tired to plan an activity for the kids, walking the dog around the neighborhood is a perfect fall-back family activity. If you’re not looking to participate, send the kids out in the backyard with a tennis ball or another favorite toy and let them work off some energy together. 46,300,000 households own dogs, so consider this option if you’re running out of steam entertaining your kids.
Though cats may be a bit pickier about the timing of when they want to play, the same can be said for them, too. Have the kids spend some time playing with the cat’s favorite toy. Some people will even walk their cats, too.
Garden
If you’re looking for something more hands-on that the whole family can do together, consider gardening. Of family activities, gardening is a great option because 18 to 34-year-olds make up 29% of all gardening households. With such a variety of ages, this can be a fun activity for lots of people. Teaching your kids young will also help them to learn some basic science skills.
Not only is gardening a versatile activity, but it’s also relaxing. Gardening is a great way to ground yourself and de-stress. If the family is feeling a bit wound up, consider slowing things down and getting back to the basics with gardening.
Expand Your Movie Collection
Another really easy way to spend time with your family when you’re feeling a bit burnt out is by putting on a classic movie. Expand your collection each time with a new favorite from someone in the family. Cuddle up with some blankets and popcorn and enjoy the quality time relaxing with one another.
Swim
Depending on the time of year, swimming is a great option when considering family activities. There’s no better way to spend a hot summer day than in the pool with your friends and family. Additionally, swimming in the lake or river near your camping grounds is a perfect family activity. If you’re really looking for something your younger kids will enjoy, rest assured knowing that swimming is the most popular recreational activity for children and teens ages seven to 17. Should it be the middle of winter but your kids are just way too wound up, you can likely use the pool at the public school nearest you. Or, if you have a gym membership, many gyms have pools, too.
Art Work
Some of the best family activities include time spent being creative. Whether you’re coloring, drawing, or painting your own masterpiece, time spent doing artwork is valuable and a great way to bond. It’s also a nice activity for when you’re hoping to spend some down-time together. Instead of running around going places, dig up your art supplies and see what you can come up with as a family.
While there are lots of different family activities you can do to keep the kids and yourself busy, these are just a few suggestions for when you’re running out of ideas. Family time is important! Be sure to make it fun with some of these ideas.
