Setting up a Nursery and Preparing for a New Arrival

Sharing is caring!

Awaiting the arrival of a new baby can be an anxious time. You may be overcome with a mixture of feelings and emotions all at the same time. Setting up a nursery and preparing (mentally and physically) for your new arrival will help you in many ways. So, try and start this process as soon as possible. Giving yourself enough time (and not rushing) will feel more therapeutic.

Making a List of What You Need

Even though newborn babies are small in size, the list of what you want and need may feel endless. Costs can spiral when you are buying for a newborn, so try and take some time to establish what is essential and what is not. What are you going to need in your nursery for those first few weeks or months? Are you going to need a wardrobe or dresser? Are you going to have a change station? When you can separate your list between needs and wants, you can reduce your spending and stress, and anxiety levels.

Somewhere to Sleep

One of the key elements in any nursery is the sleeping area for your new baby. Ensuring your baby gets a safe and peaceful night’s rest is important for them (and you). You may want to start by looking at Moses baskets for the first few months, then progressing onto a cot or cot-bed for them as they get a little bit bigger. Always practice safe sleeping when thinking (and planning) where your baby will sleep and what they will sleep in. Always ensure you purchase beds, Moses baskets, and other sleeping aids from recommended and trusted providers.

Essential Clothing

There are a lot of cute outfits and onesies that you may wish to buy. However, how many clothes does your newborn actually need? In those first few weeks and months, you may well find that they live in rompers and onesies. So, those expensive outfits and fitted sets you want may never be used. To save money, look at buying packs of rompers and onesies. And, look at getting in a variety of sizes as you will quickly see how they jump sizes. Booties, scratch mittens, and hats are also essential (and easy to misplace when they are so small), so be sure you have plenty of these on hand.

Changing Time

From the minute your baby is born, you will find that changing time consumes a large proportion of your day or routine, whether this is changing their diaper or changing their outfit. In your nursery, you must ensure you have somewhere suitable (and functional) to carry out changes when required. Therefore, a changing table or even a changing station is a must. This may be a unit that you can wheel around (or move around). Or, it may be fixed on top of a dresser or sideboard. Ensuring that you have everything ready (and to hand) will make change times easy and quick.
