Sun Small Squirts: 5 Ways to Keep Your Kids’ Skin Safe & Healthy

Kids' Skin

Sun smart is more than a nice alliteration – it’s a practical approach to keeping your kids safe, happy, and healthy under the sun.

Whether you’re planning a park play date, a beach day, or heading out for a walk, a few thoughtful habits can go a long way. Sun exposure adds up over time, so starting sun-safe habits early helps protect skin now and in the future. Whether it’s using sunscreen SPF 30, natural baby lotion, or creams with ceramide, you can enjoy sunshine-filled days without the worry of overexposure or sunburn.

1. Sunscreen

“Put on sunscreen otherwise you’ll get burnt!” Mums across the world say – and they’re right! But more than preventing sunburns, sunscreen is essential for preserving your kids’ skin health, appearance and long-term vitality while significantly reducing risk of skin cancer.

Ideally, aim for an SPF of 30 or higher, as this protects 97% of UV sun rays. Reapply every two hours (or earlier if necessary) as the sunscreen wears off, and make sure to apply it generously to all exposed skin — don’t forget ears, neck, and hairline. For water play, opt for water-resistant sunscreen that provides protection for up to 80 minutes.

Pro tip: Make it a routine and keep a small bottle of sunscreen in your bag, car, or stroller.

2. Hydration

Well-hydrated skin = healthy skin. Think of hydration as a moisturizer from the inside out. And hey, you can make it fun for the kiddos.

For example, consider making watermelon ices by blending watermelon and pouring it into molds. Also, consider colorful drink bottles that are personalized or character themed to encourage more drinking. Additionally, a fruit-infused water (berries or mint) adds a hint of flavor, and fun-shaped ice cubes (stars and dinosaurs) add a bit of fun.

Pro tip: Set a timer or make a sticker chart to remind your kids to drink throughout the day.

3. Clothing

Before sunscreen, reach for clothing. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, with a good UPF (Ultra Protection Factor), is the most reliable and consistent sun protection for your child’s skin. Less direct sun exposure means less stress on their skin, reducing the risk of redness, dryness and long-term damage.

Aim for UPF of 30 or higher for swimwear and other clothing, as this blocks 96% of UV sun rays. Additionally, wear wide-brimmed hats to shade your face, neck and ears, and sunglasses to block UV sun rays and protect your child’s eyes from sun damage.

Pro tip: Pale or white fabrics reflect the sunlight and help keep your child cool.

4. Shade

The sun is strongest between 11am and 3pm during daylight savings, and 10am and 2pm outside of DST. Smart shade choices significantly reduce direct sun exposure and provides a cool, comfortable play zone for your child.

When you picnic, do so under trees, as this provides shade that’s free and eco-friendly. Or, if there are no trees around, consider portable, pop-up beach tents to give instant cover for snacks and rests. Try to play indoors during peak hours, or scout local parks that have overhead shelters or shade sails.

Pro tip: As the sun shifts, adjust your setup to stay covered.

5. After-sun care

Even with the best precautions, sometimes little minds outrun little bodies, and a bit too much sun exposure can happen. Proper after-sun care cools, soothes and restores the skin.

This includes a lukewarm bath or shower to ease the heat without shocking the skin. Make sure to keep skin moisturized with creams that have ceramide to help rebuild the skin barrier, and soothe with aloe vera to calm redness and itching. Finally, cleanse with sulfate-free washes that respect the skin’s natural oils.

Pro tip: Watch for blistering, fever, or persistent redness that may require medical attention.

Teaching kids to be sun smart from an early age helps build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Enjoy the sun!
