With online card games proving as popular as ever, we shall think about the origins of some of the expressions that are associated with card playing.
If you are eager to get on and play a game, then Blitz Poker can provide you with the online opportunity.
So, to the origins of some of the expressions that we often hear that have associations with card playing.

Card Sharp or Card Shark
The term card sharp dates to the 1880s and the time of the Wild West saloons and their card rooms. It had evolved into the expression card shark, as we know it today, by the 1940s.
By definition, a card shark is a person who makes money by cheating when they play cards. This is the beauty of online card games, all forms of cheaing are eliminated. Everyone is playing on a level playing field, or baize, in a metaphoric and virtual sense.
Call Someone’s Bluff
The idiom call someone’s bluff has a meaning in cards and elsewhere. By definition it is about exposing a person’s action as a pretence. In poker or brag, it is about making an opponent show their hand so that it reveals the values of their cards to be weaker than their heavier betting strategy would suggest.
Bluffing in poker is how you can succeed when you are not receiving the kinds of cards that will allow you to make a flush, straight, or full house. It is not cheating, it is part of the game. Bluffing gives players almost a second chance when they are not receiving good cards and are adept in the art of deceiving their fellow players. Poker is a game where deception is welcomed as a skill.
Call a spade a spade
This could, of course, refer to the suit of spades in cards or a spade used for digging. By definition, it is about speaking plainly and saying something how it is, whether or not it might be a popular way of saying it.
It is an interesting thought that the expression might be connected to cards. You do have the expression call used in cards. This relates to someone in poker saying I’m calling your bluff. This is a player asserting that they have the better hand. The caller then has to match the bet.
There are different uses of call in different card games. The Laws and Practice of Whist by Caelebs, published in 1859, says that Calling is the only positive avowal permitted at whist. This is suggesting it is time to see who has won. It is by matching the amount of a bet that the person who says call remains in the game.
One-Eyed Jack / One-Eyed Jacks
The expression One-Eyed Jacks refers to the fact that two of the jacks in a standard deck of playing cards have one eye. This is the Jack of hearts and the Jack of Spades. The expression is conveniently used to specify the situation that half the jacks should be wild. It is an ancient saying from poker slang tradition. It has perhaps caught on as a saying because of its association with pirates.
So, a few expressions you might have heard of whose origins can be traced back to the early playing of cards. If not, they have later become associated with the game. They are one of the reasons why we are fascinated by the game. In recent years that fascination has extended to playing cards online. A popular card game to play online is Texas hold ’em, a version of poker. More and more of us are seeing the benefit of pursuing our hobbies and pastimes online. It can be as exciting, if not more, playing cards online as it is in person. We can think about the above expressions as we play. Whether or not the other players know them, cards can be played and understood internationally by those from all nationalities.
