The Ultimate Stress Relievers for the Working Mom

Working mothers need to find a way to destress after a full day of working and then having to return home to start cooking, helping the children with homework and the list of a mother just gets longer and longer. You don’t want to return home and take the stress out on your family who can’t wait to throw their arms around you. Being a mother can be one of the most rewarding and stressful ‘jobs’ you will ever have, so you have to find the perfect ways to destress. Make sure that whatever you choose to go into, it is something you know you can achieve because if you don’t, this could add stress to an already stressful day.

  1. Play fun games that involve the whole family

There are so many options out there when it comes to finding games to play that involve the whole family. Not only is it a good stress reliever, but often has us in fits of laughter, you know the old saying ‘laughter is the best medicine’ and it doesn’t cost a thing. Find games that everyone can join in where you can ‘partner up’ with a sibling, partner or parent and child so that it can make it possible to help each other in beating the other team. Have singing or coloring-in competition and vote on who sung or colored in the best without anyone knowing who colored in what, just make sure there are enough crayons and sparkly things about.

  1. Meditate

Meditation is a good and natural way to release stress. This is good for the body, mind and soul. There are no right or wrongs in the way of meditation as it is a rather personal thing as many people see it as a spiritual form of relaxation. Meditation is just a way of shutting out the world and noise around you, going into your ‘quiet’ space, however you choose. Soft classical music or nature sounding music in the background can help you to go into a serene and calming space and once you ‘clear’ out your head and just take in the sounds around you, you will begin to relax and go into a meditation like state. The more you practice the easier it will become. Meditation is about you and you can go and learn to meditate but the best type of meditation is the one you feel most comfortable with. Many people find it relaxing to read inspirational quotes or uplifting stories before trying to meditate. Taking a hot bath, surrounded by candles, rose petals and calming incense is a form of meditation that can help restore that tired feeling and rejuvenate all the body, giving you more energy to face anything the day or night may bring.

  1. Take up a class

Another way to relieve stress is by gyming, painting, knitting, or joining a club, such as a reading/writing club etc. By taking up a class, learning to paint, sketch or learning a new skill or joining a group with the same interests, will get you out of the house and get you meeting new people outside of your family unit. This will benefit both yourself and the family, it will actually strengthen relationships within the household. We all need something of interest to do, that’s fun, that takes us away from the negativity and stress of the day. When there has been a stressful situation that seems to be brewing, it is good to be able to remove yourself from the drama that is unfolding and find something more positive and calming to remain focused on.

  1. Visit a remote island with your husband or girlfriends

When feeling under stress, start planning some time away with your husband or

girlfriends to get away and relax. There is nothing like simply just letting your hair down.  A remote island such as Thanda Island may just be the answer when you feel like you have to get away from the hum of the city and working life. We all need that ‘time out’, so find what your interests are before making any bookings. You don’t want to add any more stress than necessary.

  1. Have a glass of wine while watching a good movie

There is something to be said about a good glass of wine that really helps one unwind, and if you are watching a good interesting movie with nibbles, it just can’t get any better. All mothers need a little time out from time to time, so sit back and enjoy a little time to yourself.
