Life is busy.

As a mom, you have a demanding but rewarding job. You work all day, take care of your children and still manage to be a rockstar through all of it. Even though you put your kids and family first, you need to remember to take some time for yourself and take care of certain things every year.

Sometimes, some of the most important things get pushed off to the side. This is your reminder to take life by the reins and get back on track for your best year yet. Here are nine things moms should be doing every year to be the best moms ever.

1. Go Through Your Beauty Supplies

New beauty products come and go. It’s easy to add to your stash of beauty products. From countless lip glosses to multiple eye shadow pallets, they can pile up, and you may not remember when you got them or how old they are. Stay on top of refreshing the supply you have by going through your makeup drawer at least once a year.

All of these products are going on your body somehow, and it goes on highly sensitive areas. Make sure items like sunscreen, hair products, eye products, foundation, cleansers and other things like those don’t sit in your drawer for more than a year. Get rid of items you don’t use anymore and are over their expiration date.

2. Get Your Mammogram and Pap Smear

Depending on your age, you should be getting a mammogram every year. Women aged 45 and older should get a mammogram every one to two years. A mammogram is a screening test used to find breast cancer before you would have symptoms.

For women 25 and older, you should be getting a routine pap smear, which screens for cervical cancer. It looks for abnormal cells that could lead to cancer in the cervix. At the same time, you could get screened for the human papillomavirus (HPV) as well. It’s beneficial for moms to keep up with their health every year.

3. Do Your Taxes

Everyone should do this, including moms. You probably already know to get your taxes done, but tax season slowly creeps up, and if you have kids, you have a little more to do as far as taxes go with filling out forms and ensuring you add any dependents.

Set a time each year before your taxes are due on April 15. This will lessen your stress surrounding tax season. Plus, if you’re a new mom and need help figuring out how to add a dependent, it gives you time to set up an appointment with a local tax representative to ensure you know how to do it to get your return.

4. Review Your Life Insurance Policy

Once a year, take time to review your life insurance policy. If you have life insurance, you’re already ahead of the game! However, as you have kids or go through changes in your life, you need to make sure your life insurance keeps up with you.

Life insurance policies last an average of 10 to 30 years, and a lot can happen in that time. You may have had kids, gotten married or divorced, had a career change or something else that would have made a significant difference in your life. Looking over your policy once every year ensures you and your kids are covered.

5. Take a Solo Trip

Take some time for yourself and go somewhere you’ve wanted to go for a long time but haven’t because life got in the way. Self-care is essential, so do something fun for yourself. Whether you drive somewhere, go on a cruise or make a cross-country trip, do it yourself.

If you don’t want to go alone, ask some of your friends or spouse to go with you. Make it a kid-free experience. During this time, you might find out something about yourself that you never knew. Do this once a year and use it to reflect on the past year.

6. Spend a Special Mom-and-Me Day with Each Kid

Once you get your solo trip done, make days during the year where you carve out time to spend with each of your children. Kids are only under your roof for so long, and they grow up so fast. Planning a day where you can spend quality time with each child will allow you and them to have sweet experiences and memories together.

When planning those days, ask your kids what they would like to do, and then pick something you want to do with them. It will be a great bonding experience for both of you. Plus, the more you bond, the better off your child will be as they develop.

7. Write Down the Goals You Met

Finally, take a moment every year to write down the goals you met for that year. Maybe you became a new mom, perhaps you got a promotion at your job, or perhaps you finally feel comfortable with your body.

Often, people forget about the issues and goals they’ve spent worrying about for weeks, months or even years because they eventually resolve or are met. You got over those things, and you met those goals. Reflect on the year you’ve had and remind yourself that you’re fantastic and can do anything you set your mind to! Take that time to write out new goals for yourself, too.
