Try Something Different This Summer: Water Sports

Sharing is caring!

Water sports are some of the most thrilling outdoor pursuits out there (whatever you choose), so why not give one a go this summer? There’s something for everyone, whatever your age or fitness level!

Here are five of our favorites, and how you can get involved.

Canoeing

Canoeing is one of the most popular and easily-accessible water sports, and often one of the most wallet-friendly. It’s not super-vigorous, which makes it achievable for even less-mobile people, and it’s a fantastic way to build upper body strength.

Canoeing is also a great water sport to do with friends or family members, as the benches inside the boat can seat multiple people. More than one person can paddle, too, as canoes have short-handled single-bladed paddles.

Kayaking

Quite different from its sister sport canoeing, kayaking is no less fun. A kayak is a closed-top boat (protecting your legs from potential splashes!) and requires a double-ended paddle.

Kayaking can be taken at any pace, from leisurely to all-out, and once you get really good, you might even want to try out white-water kayaking!

As with any other watersport, you shouldn’t just jump in a kayak and get going. Take classes at an outdoor pursuits center first, so you can get used to the water in a supervised environment.

Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is a great water sport for people of all ages, fitness levels, and abilities because it can be done lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing. While it looks difficult, and stand-up paddleboarding does require serious core strength, getting started is easy, and you can progress from lying down to standing at your own pace.

It’s low-impact, too, so it’s ideal for anyone who needs to protect their joints from more demanding sports such as running.

Sailing

Sailing is a very versatile water sport, with lots of different options – just look at the number of Olympic sailing events! You can get out on the water either alone or with a group, taking in the wonders of the open water and fresh air all around you. It can be everything from a relaxed, idyllic day out to an extreme sport.

Of course, the main barrier to getting involved in sailing is that most people don’t own a boat! However, all isn’t lost. You can hire sailing dinghies and other equipment from a local company to get you started.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is, to put it mildly, incredibly exciting. Skimming at speed across the surface of the water with the sun in your eyes and the spray on your face
