Every home has a few objects shrouded in mystery when looking at numbers and dials. There are puzzles and brainteasers in every room that are there to taunt us every day. These are the kinds of items that we look at every day, and everyone says they know about, but I think deep down we all secretly don’t have a clue what our toasters, radiators, or fridges are asking of us with those little dials that taunt us every day.
And because this blog is all about optimism, let’s look at each of these persnickety dials, and help clear the air. Have a quick read, and you could soon be that person at home who can feel high and mighty knowing about what those numbers mean.
Let’s start, as all good things should, with a bit of toast first thing in the morning.
What do the Numbers on Your Toaster Mean?
Arguably the one dial in your home that is going to lead to arguments when someone asks what it does, your humble toaster can sometimes feel like it is mocking you for not getting your toast just how you like it.
The big debate stems from the argument of whether the numbers on your toaster relate to how long you want the bread in there for, or how hot the rack inside will get. Well, what if I told (and get ready to have your mind blown) that it means neither?
Yes, the dial on your toaster doesn’t relate to either of these but to a grading system known as browning control. It is an indicator of how brown you want your toast to be. Pop it at 1, and you’ll get white as white toast with a little crisp. Crank it to the top, and you’ll get perfectly charred toast for those maniacs out there who like it.
And, just to throw even more confusion in the mix, browning control will vary depending on where in the world you live, as we eat different kinds of bread. So someone with a slice from a baguette in France will get different browning from their 3 than someone toasting Pain de Mnage in Canada.
What do the Numbers on Your Radiator Valves Mean?
It’s still cold in there, turn the radiator valve up.
How many times have you heard that in your life? Radiators are a mystery onto themselves, and it is no surprise that most people will not have one iota of what their valves are meant to represent.
If you have a thermostatic valve (the one with the numbers) if you’re cranking it up to 5 at night to get a room warm, you’re doing it all wrong (and if you’ve no clue what that valve looks like, there are some excellent examples here at Trade Radiators).
The numbers on a radiator valve refer to how you want your radiator to match a specific temperature in the room. Your valve isn’t trying to get the radiator to get piping hot but wants to get the room to get warmer before it limits the amount of water coming in. Most valves will display a temperature scale on the box it comes in, to give an idea of what each number will give you.
The big mistake people make is thinking that turning it to 5 is the way to get a room warm. The next time you need to turn your radiators on, set the valve to 2 or 3, wait a while, and then touch to check the radiator. If it is hot to the touch, it is doing its job, and the problem is with the room. If it’s still cold, there’s nothing more the radiator can do as it is already working away.
And speaking of cold things…
What do the Numbers Inside Your Refrigerator Mean?
I’ve left the fridge to last because it is the most confusing and, honestly, you’ll be annoyed by it unless your fridge has a little sticker above the gauge indicating what to do.
The numbers on your fridge relate to how cold, or powerful, you want the refrigerator to be. It depends entirely on the brand you’re buying. So while your fridge may get coldest when you set it to 1, your neighbour, with a completely different fridge, will find it gets coldest when they have the dial set to the max.
If you can’t find the manual for your fridge, it is best to take a middle of the road approach and tinker with your dial by placing it at different numbers and keeping a note of what happens every few days. You’ll eventually find the sweet spot for your fridge.
