What is Pterygium: Nail Pterygium Treatment

Sharing is caring!

A woman with long beautiful nails.

Pterygium is one of the most common nail pathologies.

It is diagnosed in every fourth person who did a manicure in the wrong way and cared for their cuticle incorrectly.

Let’s figure out what is the disease of pterygium nail, how it occurs and by what means it can be removed.

What does nail pathology look like?

Cuticle hypertrophy may cause pterygium disease. Cuticle is a thin skin at the base of the nail. Normally, its length reaches 1-1.5 mm.

In pathology, it completely or partially covers the nail plate, changing its color and shape.

Normally, the skin is cut off with nippers, and cuticle scissors or removed with an orange stick in tandem with a remover. These manicure tools online can be acquired at a specialized store.

As soon as pterygium is diagnosed, a dermatologist prescribes a special treatment to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the nails and their health.

Factors provoking the formation of pterygium

This is an infectious disease.  It develops under the influence of moisture and heat.

If your legs or arms are in a humid environment for a long time, where the temperature is above 25 degrees, then the risk of developing pathology increases by 50%.

The cuticle begins to soften and deform. Cracks appear on it, where the infection gets, provoking the rapid growth of the nail skin.

Knowing this cause of the nail-pterygium, it is quite simple to choose a treatment. And the first thing to do is to exclude or reduce the time spent in damp rooms with high temperatures like saunas, baths, and pools.

The second reason is incorrect work with the cuticle. Some girls, noticing that the skin has grown too much, try to remove it on their own.

They use pushers, scissors, and clippers. And, unfortunately, not everyone can do it carefully with no harm to their health.

The nail master knows how to remove pterygium that has slightly exceeded the permissible level. The master will do it via a classic, hardware, or combined type of manicure.

And the dermatologist knows how to properly remove the skin, which practically blocked the nail plate.

The causes of the nail-pterygium are:

biting nails habit and deforming the nail plate with teeth;

changes in the shape and color of nails in psoriasis and lichen planus;

cell nutrition failures in your hands;

Violations in the cellular nutrition of the nails.

As you can see, the range of factors that need to be controlled is quite extensive.

Varieties of pterygium

There are two types of pathology: normal (dorsal) and ventral. The main feature of the first form is a pterygoid scar. It grows on the nail plate.

The second form is diagnosed if the skin has grown to the inner surface of the nail.

The form of pterygium nail treatment in this case depends on the type and stage of the pathology.

In the first stages of dorsal pterygium, the doctor prescribes the ingrown skin removal using special tools.

If ventral pterygium is diagnosed, removal of the skin and restorative therapy is prescribed with using baths and taking special medicines.

How do you fix pterygium nails in each case is prescribed by a specialist after assessing the condition of the nail plate and the causes that provoked the pathology.

What symptoms of the disease you need to consider

Besides visual diagnostics, the growth of the skin on the nail plate, you should focus on the following factors:

  fingers itching;

discoloration of the nail plate, it may turn yellowish;

nail thickening;

skin redness around the nail plate.

All these symptoms indicate that the cuticle area is vulnerable and the infection is already evolving there.

Pterygium elimination at home

Pterygium treatment natural is only allowed if you have minor cuticle damage.

In this case, a warm bath with eucalyptus or tea tree oil is suitable. Hands should be kept in warm water for at least 5 minutes. Then wipe dry and gently remove cuticle damage.

After the procedure, a moisturiser is applied to the hands.

How to avoid pterygium occurrence

Another important question: what procedures prevent the occurrence of pterygium and how often should they be done?

The first one is a regular manicure.

You can do it yourself after buying a manicure set or individual tools, or make an appointment with the master. It is recommended to do a manicure every 3-4 weeks.

The second one is to use special tools that slow down the growth of the cuticle.

These are gels, lotions and special ointments. They prevent the infection extension in case of deformation of the cuticle.

The third one is baths with sea salt and essential oils.

They soften the cuticle and skin of your hands. Moreover, some ingredients like tea tree oil, for example, have an antiseptic effect.

And if you notice that the skin grows on the nail plate, or some cracks appear on it, then consult a specialist.
