Parenting in the 21st century is a lot different from our parents. There are so many new and exciting ways to raise children that we have never had access to before, and it just feels like we’re on this upward trajectory: We can do anything! But let’s not forget one thing: Parents of previous generations did all this too. And then there are all the external factors: Bullying has never been more prevalent, kids are growing up faster than ever before because of social media and access to inappropriate content, and there’s more pressure than ever to succeed academically and professionally.
Adding to this complexity is that parents today often feel like they have to do it all on their own. We can’t just ask our parents or grandparents for advicewe have to rely on Google (or worse, Dr. Google). And if we’re lucky enough to have friends with kids, most of the time, they are just as clueless about what’s going on as we are!

All that being said, there are also a lot of advantages to being a parent today. For one, our children have access to more opportunities than ever before. We can give them experiences and exposure to different cultures and lifestyles that would have been unthinkable for our parents or grandparents. And thanks to technology, we can stay in touch with our kids no matter where they are in the world (or how late it is at night).
Our kids have the opportunity to grow up in a less judgmental society. In today’s world of social media, everyone is constantly sharing their experiences and thoughts onlineand it seems that people are more tolerant than ever of different lifestyles. And though this can be problematic when it comes to cyberbullying or “fake news,” we seem to have more open conversations about race, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc., which will hopefully lead us toward a future free from prejudice and discrimination.

Finally, let’s get real here: No matter how hard parents try (or don’t), parenting isn’t easy. So what should we aim for with our 21st-century approach? Hopefully, we’ll aim for progress over perfection. We might not be able to do everything the “right” way, but as long as we can learn from our mistakes and make a conscious effort every day to improve ourselves and our kids’ lives, parenting in this century has been a success!
