9 Ways to Unwind As A Mom

Sharing is caring!

Being a mom is one of the most hectic and stressful occupations you could possibly have. We put occupations in scare quotes simply because being a mom isn’t actually a job, of course; you don’t get paid for it, and there’s no career ladder to climb. Still, it can sometimes feel like there’s more work to do as a mom than there is in a regular job, and so it’s important to set aside time for unwinding. It can be hard to know what to do when you’re exhausted at the end of a long day of parenting, so here are 9 ways to unwind as a mom.

1. Gaming

Gaming was once thought of as a pastime exclusively enjoyed by teenagers or young men, but these days, anyone can pick up a smartphone, a tablet, or even a games console and enjoy some gaming. You might not think there are any games out there for you, but that couldn’t be further from the truth; games of all genres are available to play, and they can be hugely relaxing. You could even try some online casino gaming or sports betting, so why not give it a try by clicking here to get started?

2. Reading

Few pastimes are as relaxing or as engaging as reading. Simultaneously, you can be transported to an entirely new world full of fantasy and possibility, and you can also be relaxing, because your brain is entirely focused on the task of absorbing the words in front of you. Just like gaming, there are books of many genres available, so whether you’re a horror fanatic or you like a good romantic story, you’ll find that there are options out there for you.

3. A long bath

Why not pair your reading with a long, luxurious bath? Obviously, make sure you’re not bringing paper books into the bath with you, as you might damage them, but if you’ve got a waterproof way of reading, then taking a bath and reading at the same time can be incredibly relaxing and indulgent. Either way, soaking in a hot bath at the end of a long day is a great way to reset your mind and body and focus yourself on getting a great night’s sleep.

4. Exercise

You might not think that exercise is what you want to do when you’re exhausted, but it can actually help you to recharge your batteries and feel more rejuvenated and refreshed. Make sure you don’t pick a workout that’s going to completely destroy you, though. If you don’t feel up to much more than a gentle walk or bike ride, then do that; whatever feels most comfortable for you, take that option. Push your limits gently, but don’t try to break them!

5. A spa day

If you’re lucky enough to be able to afford a spa day, then being pampered by someone who really knows what they’re doing is a great way to reset. Getting massages, sitting in a sauna for a few minutes, or just relaxing by the pool with your favourite book are all unparalleled experiences, especially when you’ve been hard at work parenting all day. There are plenty of cheap spa day experiences available, too, and if you choose right, you don’t have to compromise on quality.

6. Watching movies or TV

We have entered the era of streaming content, so if you’re someone who likes to watch a good movie or TV series, the chances are that you’re absolutely spoiled for choice. There’s no way we can watch every single good new show or movie that comes out, so pick something you’ve been meaning to get around to and watch that. If you don’t feel up to something new and you just want to watch something comforting and familiar, then stick your favourite movie or show on!

7. Visiting friends

Sometimes, visiting friends can be just as tiring and draining an experience as parenting a child; if you’re an introvert, socialising can be exhausting. We fully understand that, but it might still do you good to get out of the house (if you can arrange babysitter cover, of course) and see some trusted friends. If you can, try to pick friends in whose company you feel completely relaxed; those are the friends who will help you the most when you need to unwind.

8. Going out for a meal

Eating at restaurants is underrated these days. Many choose to simply stay in with a takeaway (which, if that’s your jam, we won’t judge you for at all!), but the experience of actually leaving the house in order to dine shouldn’t be overlooked. There’s something about sitting at a table, getting all of your food brought to you, and being able to focus on conversation (or even just relaxing on your own!) that makes restaurant dining unparalleled as a relaxation experience.

9. Cooking

Cooking is actually a great stress reliever. It can help you to relax when things feel insurmountable, and it can help you to improve your health, too, since it’s almost certainly more nutritious than eating out or buying ready-made meals. If you haven’t cooked for a long time or you’re just getting started, there’s no shame at all in starting simple, so pick a meal that you love (and that’s easy for you to make) and try creating it yourself. You’d be surprised at how rewarding it feels!
