When it comes to houseplants, I think we can all agree that they’re the best! They add color and life to your home, they’re great at purifying the air, they’re super-easy to take care of, and they make you look like a BAMF in front of your friends when you tell them that yes, you do have a green thumb.
But sometimes those little green buddies can get a little… needy. They might start to droop or dry out (which is their way of telling you they need more water). Or maybe they’re starting to look kind of sad and limpthat’s probably because they need some TLC!
But even though houseplants are so easy to keep alive and thriving, there are still some things you can do to make sure they thrive even more. And here are my top tips for taking care of houseplants:
1. Water Regularly
Water your plants regularly. You might think that the only thing you need to do to keep your houseplants happy is to give them a little water once in a while. That’s not entirely trueyou actually need to water them regularly, or else you’ll risk having a lot of dead plants on your hands.
The best way to know when to water your plants is by checking the soil. If it feels dry about an inch down, it’s time for a drink! You can also stick your finger in and see if it feels moist (but not wet) at that depth.
If you’re worried about overwatering, don’t be! It’s actually pretty easy to overdo it with plantsit’s much harder to under-water them than over-water them. If your plant starts looking droopy or wilted, check its soil first before assuming it needs more water.
2. Make Sure the Soil is Moist, but Not Soggy.
If it’s too wet, it could lead to root rot and other problems. Water your plants every day or two if you can’t attend to them daily. If you don’t want to water them too often, try using a drip irrigation system so that the soil stays evenly moist without getting soggy or drying out completely between watering sessions.
Don’t over-water your plants. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re cleaning up soil or watering your plants, but let’s face ityou probably don’t need as much water as you think. If there’s still some moisture in the soil after watering and it looks like it’s going to dry out before the next time you water, try adding less water next time! This will help prevent root rot and save your plant from being overwatered.
3. Give Them Plenty of Light and Fresh Air.
They need at least six hours of sunlight every day to thrive! It’s important that they get enough light so they can photosynthesize, which means they can make their own food from sunlight. If you don’t have a lot of natural light in your home, try putting them near a window with sun exposure during the day. Also remember that some plants like more sunlight than otherscheck their care instructions for specific recommendations about light exposure.
Houseplants need sunlight so they can grow their leaves and flowers, but direct sunlight can burn their leaves or even kill them if it’s too strong. Make sure the plants are in indirect sunlight and rotate them often so they get equal hours in front of each window.
Like any living thing, houseplants need certain things in order to grow and thrive: light, water, nutrients and more. If you don’t know what your plant needsor what kind of light it needsthen it’s going to be hard for you to keep it alive! So before you start looking at cute houseplant pictures on Pinterest or Instagram (and trust me, we’ve all done this), make sure that you know which kind of plant will work best for your space and lifestyle.
4. Fertilize
Fertilize them once a month with an organic fertilizer like Miracle-Gro or Earth Juice from PetSmartit’s easy and it works! It’s best to avoid using plant food with high nitrogen levels (like Miracle-Gro), because this can actually damage your plant over time.
5. Prune
Prune off dead leaves or flowers as soon as you see them so that pests don’t have time to get in there and start laying eggs or whatever else pests do when they find nice little homes like this one!
Check your plants regularly for pests or disease and remove any dead leaves or flowers that may harbor harmful insects or pathogens like mildew spores or mites (which can spread quickly). You may also want to prune back stems occasionally so that new growth doesn’t become crowded by older leaves within its reach; this will help promote healthy new growth in addition to keeping things tidy around your home.
6. Get in Touch with Nature
It’s easy to forget that plants are living things, but they are! And like all living things, they need love and attention in order to thrive. So, try spending some time with your plants every dayjust being near them will help you get a better sense of what they need from you.
Play music for your plants and you could even take THC gummies to get yourself in the right mindset to know what your plants need. Plants respond to sound waves just like we do. So, if you play music for them, it can help them grow stronger and healthier.
