Teaching Language Arts to Elementary Students Who Love to Draw

Elementary Students

Students who love art and love to draw can often be uninterested in reading. Reading and language arts is more left brained than the artistic type who are right brain dominant. You might notice that it will be difficult to get these students to participate in their language arts classwork or to be enthusiastic about reading assignments. In order to help these students out, you might want to change up some of your assignments or book reports to help appeal to a different group of students. Adding in a drawing portion to some assignments will really help the students who struggle, and give them some buy in. This will also help students to retain information by visualizing. Here are some ideas and ways to change up your assignments.

Cereal Box Book Reports

Book reports are often the most dreaded assignment. As a teacher, you might understand that, but you know you still need to assign book reports because reading and studying works of literature is important. A good way to spice up book reports or make them more interesting, would be to minimize the amount of writing the students have to do and try replacing some of it with drawing. How you can do this is to make sure the student reads the book like they are supposed to, but instead of writing up long essays about what they read, they can turn it into a cereal box. Let your students’ creativity flow to create a new cereal that connects to the book, and write the summary synopsis on the sides and back of the box. See cereal box book report for more details.

Figures of Speech Book

A great way to help students to remember their parts of speech, and to also have a good time coloring, would be to create a parts of speech book. This will definitely help students to remember the confusing different parts of speech. For example, students can draw out idioms such as raining cats and dogs by drawing dogs and cats raining from the sky. For hyperbole, students can draw out I’m so hungry I could eat a horse. This will be a fun activity to help students retain information while enjoying drawing and coloring.

Character Profiles

While students are reading, you should have them take notes and keep a log of all the different characters in the book. At the end of the book, the students can create character profiles to help keep organized who everyone is and how they are connected to each other. Then you can have students draw each character and color what they believe they should look like. Make sure students are taking notes of important features such as hair color, height, clothing, eye color, etc.

Design A Setting

This is a good assignment when you are teaching students about what setting is. This should help them to visualize as they read. When you read a book together, they can draw and design what they imagine the setting to look like. This will help them to take their thinking a little further. They will need to pay closer attention to figure out what the location would look like such as types of trees or cars, streets and buildings. Give them time to let them color it for ownership.

Puppets Telling a story

Have students create a puppet of the characters in the book and have them recreate a scene together with other students in the class who made characters that go together. Have them write actual quotes from the character on the back of the puppet so that they can remember them while acting out the scene.
